How to know when you’re ready for your big break

How will you know when you’re ready for your big break? It’s a moment you’ve dreamed about since your were little. You’ve been working your ass off for years. But are you ready for your moment? It’s an important question to ponder because, let’s face it, the world is full of people you don’t remember […]

Beware the Validation Trap

True Story: I was recently in SEPHORA lamenting that two of my favorite lipsticks had been discontinued without warning.
The sales associate was offhand and a tad blunt: Yeah, they probably didn’t sell well.
This is what I heard: Lipstick loser.

…And the Oscar for Best Casting Goes To…

oscar

Yes, it’s time for my annual rant about The Academy’s Big Insult.

Despite the BAFTAs getting on board with a Casting category in 2019 there is still no Oscar for Best Casting even though the current president of the Academy’s Board of Governors is a Casting Director. David Rubin’s credits include The Talented Mr Ripley and Lars and the Real Girl. I like to think he’s working behind the scenes to change the hearts and minds of the old guard.

Make It Your Own

Make-It-Your-Own

To make something one’s own is to take something and adapt it to oneself. Knowing how to do this is absolutely essential in the camera ready universe.

Whether you are auditioning for a project and reading the same script as everyone else or interviewing for a job and meeting all of the same qualifications as every other applicant, how you make it your own determines if you make it to the next round and ultimately get hired.

My 2023 Word of the Year: Refinement

My 2023 Word of the Year: Refinement

I wish I knew who came up with the brilliant notion of replacing the traditional New Year’s Resolution with one single word to focus on for the coming year. I’d like to thank them.

Your word is an organizing principle or theme, perhaps even your annual north star, instead of a decision/goal you may or may not stick with (the data says overwhelmingly we don’t stick with them).

Learn how Kathy McCabe turned the dream into reality and built Dream of Italy into a thriving brand.
The NY Times recommends the podcast companion to the successful PBS series as one of 13 best for “wandering souls.”

Thanks for the permission slip to think and dream bigger J Dilla!

Thanks for the permission slip to think and dream bigger J Dilla!

I know I’m not the target demographic and you may be thinking, huh, Barb, I did not expect this reference, but I was genuinely excited when I read that Quest Love is executive-producing a documentary, Dilla Time – “part biography, part musicology, and part musical meditation” – adapted from Dan Charnas’ book of the same name about legendary, visionary, genius artist/producer J Dilla.

Roe v Wade: The post I never imagined writing

Roe v Wade: The post I never imagined writing

If you think overturning Roe v. Wade has nothing to do with you – or is an act worth celebrating – I invite you to read my story with an open heart.

I am a deeply private person. I have good friends who will read this and say I had no idea.

Moved by the many brave posts I’ve read the past several days and a whole lotta Brene Brown I feel called to share what I would normally consider none of your business.

Summer Reading 2022

ummer Reading 2022

Tsundoku is the Japanese word for all the books you buy but never read. This summer I am determined to make a dent in the pile of books I acquired in 2020 and 2021 but still haven’t read. It’s a little misleading that a solid chunk of the stack is digital, making the total appear smaller than it really is.
